Michael Gannon hits back at Jack Butland claim at Rangers after what happened

Michael Gannon has urged Rangers fans to be more patient with Jack Butland after his dismal display against Manchester United on Thursday.

The 31-year-old shot-stopper was at fault for Man United’s opening goal, punching a corner into the back of his own net before allowing Bruno Fernandes to slot a late winner through his legs on 23 January.

Cyriel Dessers thought he had secured a dramatic draw at Old Trafford, firing home two minutes from time, only to be let down by the goalkeeper in the second minute of added time.

Writing via the Daily Record [25 January], Gannon said: “There are plenty of punters who are starting to think Butland should suffer the same fate as me – getting the Spanish archer treatment.

“But that’s where Jack and I should part ways. I deserved the El Bow while Butland has more than earned his shot at redemption.”

Jack Butland deserving of Rangers axe after Manchester United blunder?

Butland has been far from his best this season, even making serious mistakes towards the end of the 2023/24 campaign, but he has made far more key saves to keep his side in games.

Philippe Clement certainly has a tough decision to make, whether he sticks with the 31-year-old or replaces him with Liam Kelly for a few matches, but that could rock his confidence.

He already has nine clean sheets in the Scottish Premiership this term, having kept 18 last season and winning the Golden Glove award, but it is vital that he can rediscover his previous form.

Rangers 'keeper Jack Butland

The manager might be left with no other choice but to drop Butland from the starting XI but the amount of criticism he has received seems wholly unfair after so many heroic performances in Light Blue.

Having signed at Ibrox as a free transfer in the summer of 2023, the shot-stopper has more than repaid his wages in Scotland, but it is understandable to see the frustrations emerging over his current form.

In other Rangers news, the current transfer model at Ibrox is absolutely disgraceful as £10million news emerges at Celtic.
