Chris Sutton takes dig at Rangers as new £10m transfer agreed

Chris Sutton has taken a dig at Rangers as he unleashed his wrath on Celtic for agreeing to sell Kyogo Furuhashi to Rennes for £10million.

Furuhashi, 30, has all but completed his transfer to Rennes, with the Bhoys set to pocket £10m from his transfer and re-sign Jota from the Ligue 1 club for £8m [Sky Sports].

Sutton, though, is not at all impressed by the deal as he hit out at Celtic‘s UEFA Champions League ambitions, while also mentioning that the Scottish champions are not in desperate need of money like their Glasgow rivals are.

“You can tell me that £10million is a good fee for a 30-year-old all you like, but that’s nothing in the modern game for a game-changer and nothing when it comes to the riches which are being dragged in the door from Europe”, Sutton wrote in his column on Daily Record‘s website (25 January)

“And, incidentally, 30 is not old. Look at Mo Salah down the road at Liverpool and it’s not as if Celtic are like Rangers and need the money.

“Why not give it your best shot to reach the next stage? Like I said, it’s like a hands-up.”

Chris Sutton mentions Rangers and blasts Celtic over Kyogo Furuhashi deal

Sutton is right. Celtic’s finances are significantly healthier than Rangers’ and they do not really need to sell Furuhashi, especially midway through the season.

However, the transfer highlights the problems at Ibrox too. The Gers have not sold a player for £10m or more since pocketing £19.6m from Calvin Bassey’s sale to Ajax in 2022 [Sky Sports].

It is also worth noting that Philippe Clement’s side have found suitable buyers for Cyriel Dessers, who is the same age as Furuhashi and contributed to seven more goals than him across all competitions last season.

Even if the Nigeria international does leave before the winter transfer window closes on 3 February, Rangers will get nowhere near £10m for him.

If it was not clear yet, the Furuhashi transfer alone highlights the differences between the two Glasgow giants at the moment.

As a Rangers fan, one can only hope that the club’s glory days on and off the pitch are on the way back.
