Troy Deeney reacts to Manchester United v Rangers controversy on talkSPORT

Manchester United were wrongfully denied a goal in their UEFA Europa League 2-1 win against Rangers at Old Trafford on Thursday, according to Troy Deeney.

Matthijs de Ligt thought he had opened the scoring for the Red Devils when he headed home an Amad Diallo corner in the 25th minute of the game on 23 January, but the goal was disallowed after Lenny Yoro was deemed to have fouled Robin Propper in the process.

Reviewing the incident instantly, Deeney pointed out that there was not enough contact from Yoro on the Gers defender for the goal to be ruled out, but acknowledged that the rules may state otherwise.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (23 January, 8:25 pm), Deeney said: “It looks like Yoro does it for me as he comes through. They are trying to block, so he just goes into the back.

“It’s not a great deal, but in today’s game, that’s probably going to be enough to be considered a foul.

“As they are all setting the block for De Ligt, you see Yoro just coming into the back of Propper, he just pushes there ever so lightly, and then, De Ligt goes and heads it.

“Personally think it’s a good goal, it should be a goal, but in European football, unfortunately, the refereeing is a little bit different.”

Manchester United too much for Rangers as Jack Butland fumbles

Rangers can take pride in their performance at Old Trafford as they held their own against the Premier League giants for the most part.

An error from Jack Butland proved to be the villain for Philippe Clement’s side as the goalkeeper accidentally punched a Christian Eriksen corner into his own net.

While Cyriel Dessers silenced the Old Trafford crowd with an equaliser just two minutes to go on the clock, Bruno Fernandes reinstated United’s lead in injury time.

As expected the Red Devils dominated the possession, but the Light Blues threatened to score more on several occasions, particularly in the first half.

The major concern for Clement is the fitness of some of his key players as the Belgian tactician was forced to take Leon Balogun and Valclav Cerny off due to injuries.

De Light, meanwhile, cannot have any complaints about his goal being disallowed even though Yoro’s foul on Propper may have been soft.

As Deeney pointed out, the rules of the game are such that even such a contact, especially in the opposition penalty box, will be declared a foul.

In other Rangers news, this Light Blues ace is likely to quit Ibrox in the summer with an English club already lurking.
