Rangers to be tempted by Cyriel Dessers transfer as exit timeline mooted
Steven Thompson believes that Rangers shouldn’t ship off Cyriel Dessers until the summer transfer window.
The striker was almost the hero in the Gers’ Europa League clash against Manchester United on 23 January after he netted an 88th-minute equaliser, however, Bruno Fernandes had other ideas and bagged the winner for the Red Devils in a 2-1 win at Old Trafford.
Dessers’ future has been questioned for some time now with Philippe Clement looking to sell some players in the winter window to bring new faces in.
Speaking live on BBC Sportsound in quotes relayed by the BBC Sport website (23 January), Thompson shared his verdict on what Rangers should do.
“It depends what type of offer they were getting,” he said. “If they were offered at least what they spent on him then it might be worth it.
“But when you’ve got a player like he is just now, a hat-trick at the weekend, scoring at Old Trafford and on 17 goals for the season.
“You’d be tempted to hang on to him until the summer unless you’re bringing in a replacement that is going to guarantee you goals.”
Rangers should keep hold of Cyriel Dessers for now
Although the Nigeria international’s lack of composure in front of goal at times may frustrate fans, it’s hard to deny that he isn’t a valuable asset for Clement.
Despite Hamza Igamane taking the lead as Rangers’ number nine in recent weeks, Dessers has still managed to bag 17 goals this season and is the Ibrox outfit’s top scorer.
Not only does this show that he can be of use on more than one occasion but without his 17 goals, it’s unclear how much worse off the Gers would likely be.

The fact that Danilo is also seemingly made of glass plays in the 30-year-old’s favour as Clement wouldn’t be able to carry the season on with just one reliable number nine among his ranks.
If Rangers can hold off from selling him until the summer, they’ll give themselves more time to source a replacement and perhaps earn more money from a deal if he continues bagging goals.
