Rangers can ‘pounce for brand new transfer’ after shock absence

Rangers could enter the fray for Morgan Whittaker again after the Plymouth Argyle forward “didn’t show up” for their latest match.

Plymouth manager Miron Muslic confirmed after their 5-0 home loss to Burnley on Wednesday that his absence was unplanned as he had failed to report for duty at Home Park.

Whittaker isn’t the first player linked with a transfer to actively push for the exit, and with the Gers one of the clubs with a long-term interest in the 24-year-old, his latest move should reignite their pursuit.

In quotes reported by the BBC (22 January), Muslic said: “Morgan didn’t show up – we had a game today and he was in the selection and he wasn’t there.

“It shows the mentality or even the lack of mentality. I think you always have your responsibilities and you are under contract.”

Rangers must pursue Morgan Whittaker transfer after no-show

Although Whittaker’s no-show for Plymouth comes in the wake of reported interest from fellow Championship side Burnley [BBC, 21 January], his actions this week should have Ibrox on red alert.

The Bears have been crying out for a wide forward of Whittaker’s ability for some time, with Philippe Clement still to truly solve who he should play on the left flank in the biggest of matches.

Nedim Bajrami and Ianis Hagi have both operated out wide this season, but both players are much more comfortable in the number 10 role, while Ridvan Yilmaz and Jefte are left-backs playing further forward.

Adding Whittaker to the mix would be a game-changer for the balance down the left, and while he’d be expensive, selling someone like Cyriel Dessers – now third-choice striker – would offset this fee.

With Dessers well behind Hamza Igamane and Danilo in the pecking order and linked with the exit door himself [Scottish Sun, 16 January], bringing in the wantaway Whittaker as a replacement would be a huge coup in light blue.

His attitude, however, would need to be checked instantly.
