Cyriel Dessers ‘set for transfer already’ after Rangers v Manchester United

Cyriel Dessers could be set for the exit door at Rangers with European clubs “looking quite fondly” at him, according to Paul Robinson.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live (23 January, 9:31pm) as Dessers came off the bench to slam home an equaliser in the eventual 2-1 loss against Manchester United, Robinson discussed his future.

The 30-year-old has been linked with moves to several clubs in this transfer window, and Robinson argued that despite falling down the pecking order at Ibrox, Dessers remains a top striker on his day.

He said: “I think there’s talk of him potentially moving on in this window if Rangers are to maybe restructure.

“There’s a lot of value in Dessers, I think he’s got a good reputation – not long ago he was the Eredivisie Golden Boot winner. I think there’s clubs around Europe that are looking quite fondly at him.

“[He’s] fallen behind Igamane and Danilo at times in this Rangers lineup, but again he’s not let it affect him, he comes off the bench and does a really good job, gets his goals.”

Cyriel Dessers transfer surely off the cards after Rangers heroics

Robinson’s praise of Dessers as he replaced Nedim Bajrami midway through the second half at Old Trafford proved to be ominous, as he sent the away end into raptures with his 88th-minute equaliser.

Shrugging off Harry Maguire before taking a sensational first touch and rifling a left-footed strike into the bottom corner, the often-frustrating Dessers did exactly what many Gers fans have been wishing for.

A goal of that quality at such a vital stage of the game – only for the hosts to go on and win it – shows that Dessers does have what it takes to be the Light Blues’ leading striker, despite his recent misfortune.

The Nigerian’s loss of form in recent months, coupled with Hamza Igamane’s explosion onto the scene, has resulted in a transfer before 3 February being the natural end-point for his Ibrox career.

With the Bears needing to raise capital to fund additions in other positions this month, a transfer for Dessers could still be on the cards – and if that proves to be the case, he’s certainly gone out in style.

In other Rangers news, Kris Boyd had hoped a victory for the Light Blues could have sparked additions in the transfer market.
