Troy Deeney cannot believe ‘Bizarre’ Rangers incident v Manchester United
Jack Butland “had a stinker” as Manchester United scored their opening goal against Rangers in the Europa League, Troy Deeney says.
The ex-striker slammed the goalkeeper as he somehow scored an own goal at Old Trafford on Thursday (23 January).
Cyriel Dessers managed to equalise for the Light Blues in the 88th minute, but Bruno Fernandes scored in stoppage time as the game ended 2-1.
Speaking on talkSPORT (23 January, 21:15), commentator Jim Proudfoot said: “It’s bizarre. I’ve never seen it either, never seen that before, but it’s a Butland own goal, and it’s 1-0 to Man United.
Deeney responded: “It’s a really good explanation you’ve just given there, but for anyone who’s listening, Butland’s had a stinker.”

Butland returned to Old Trafford for the first time since making his move to the Bears in 2023.
The England international arguably had a chance to shine after missing the last few weeks for the Glaswegian outfit.
With the 31-year-old on the sidelines, Liam Kelly was handed several opportunities and didn’t look out of place in between the sticks for the Gers.
Rangers had the opportunity to go to Old Trafford and secure their place in the knockout stages of the Europa League, but will likely be in the play-offs now.
The Bears can take many positives from the performance against the Red Devils as they almost took a point away, although the lack of concentration at the end let them down.
Clement will likely not be under as much pressure after the loss as Manchester United are still one of the biggest clubs in the world.
Patrick Stewart and the hierarchy will be aware that the Belgian manager was without some key players for the fixture, but it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold.
