Sky Sports studio in stitches after what happened in Man United 2-1 Rangers

Kris Boyd had the Sky Sports studio in stitches after what happened to Rangers in the 2-1 loss against Manchester United.

The Gers travelled south of the border to Old Trafford on Thursday (23 January), where they were on the end of a late 2-1 loss.

Matthijs de Ligt had a goal ruled out for offside in the first half, which left Rio Ferdinand fuming live on TNT Sports.

At the same time, Boyd had his fellow Sky pundits in hysterics live on Sky Sports News (23 January, 8:23pm) with his response to the incident.

He said: “It’s been chalked off, the smile’s back. It’s been chalked off.”

Once the laughter had died down, Boyd added: “I’m just looking to see it again here; it’s a ball at the front post – [Robin] Propper just goes down, and maybe there’s a little shove on Robin Propper at the front post, I’m not quite sure.

“De Ligt gets his head on it, there’s no doubt about that. Yeah, it’s [Leny] Yoro who just goes into the back of Propper, there’s not a lot in it.”

Rangers hold their own v Manchester United in the Europa League

The visitors were up against the odds in the second half when Clement was forced into a double change: 18-year-old Bailey Rice replaced the experienced Leon Balogun, and Ross McCausland replaced Connor Barron.

However, Rangers were fortunate not to be a goal down heading into the break.

Despite Boyd’s relief, the ex-Gers man agreed with Ferdinand that Yoro barely made contact with Propper, but on big nights like this, sometimes you need the 50/50 decisions to go in your favour.

And the luck did not last long, as Jack Butland rather rashly punched an incoming Christian Eriksen corner into the back of his own net in the second half to give Manchester United the lead.

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland hangs his head in shame.

It is a pity the Light Blues conceded in such bizarre circumstances, even more so considering Bruno Fernandes swiftly killed the travelling celebrations four minutes after Cyriel Dessers thought he salvaged a share of the spoils.

Nevertheless, Rangers are still well-positioned to move into the next round of the Europa League, but Clement will be unable to shake the niggling feeling that he has missed a monumental opportunity to breathe confidence into his players.

Boyd may have been all smiles, but it certainly didn’t last long.
