Rangers and Man Utd slammed as ‘second-rate’ clash in damning verdict
Ian Ladyman believes that Rangers and Manchester United are facing one another in a “second-rate” fixture rather than as the powerhouse teams they used to be.
The Gers have had a torrid time this season with a 13-point gap currently separating Philippe Clement’s men from first-placed Celtic.
Writing for the print edition of the Daily Mail (23 January, page 70), Ladyman shared his thoughts on their upcoming clash at Old Trafford.
“Rangers play Manchester United tonight at Old Trafford in the Europa League,” he wrote. “They used to call these games the Battle of Britain because they usually involved the best of the English game against the Best Scotland had to offer.
“But that’s not this, United and Rangers meet in UEFA’s second-string competition, they sit seventh and eighth respectively in the league table, clinging to the two positions above the automatic qualification line.”
Rangers could cause an upset against Manchester United
While Manchester United shouldn’t be able to get beaten by the Gers, with the form they currently find themselves in, it feels like it could be a real possibility.
Neither side are in the best vein of form but if Rangers can play as well as they did against Tottenham earlier in the campaign and Hamza Igamane can find the back of the net, it’s hard to count Clement’s men out.
The Ibrox outfit have been poor in the Scottish Premiership since the start of the campaign and it feels like a lot more could come from them.

Thursday’s tie against Manchester United could end up being a turning point in the Gers’ season, especially if they can beat them by two or three goals.
Only time will tell what the football gods have in store for Rangers but if they can leave Old Trafford triumphant, it’ll be an impressive achievement.
In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement could solve an obvious problem with thee the transfer of a “superb” defender.
