Rangers prediction v Man Utd made amid ‘Wretched’ verdict
Stephen McGowan has backed Rangers to get a result against Manchester United in the Europa League amid the Red Devils’ struggles.
The Gers travel to Old Trafford on Thursday (23 January) in Europa League action and a win could see them jump above their opponents in the table.
Although Philippe Clement’s side have had a poor season domestically, they have looked more assured in European action.
Furthermore, with their opponents in a tricky run of form, including a 3-1 defeat to Brighton last time out, McGowan has backed the Scottish Premiership outfit.
He wrote in the print edition of the Scottish Daily Mail (22 January, page 67): “However, despite the Ibrox side’s domestic travel sickness and a squad assembled at a fraction of the cost of their English counterparts, they travel to Old Trafford with a spring in their step.
“If they don’t fancy their chances of pulling off another memorable result in a competition where they excel, they really should.
“This is not the Manchester United people remember. Devoid of leadership and identity ploughing through managers like a tractor through muck, their wretched 3-1 defeat to Brighton last Sunday left Ruben Amorin sounding like a man who suddenly realised he made a terrible mistake leaving Sporting Lisbon.”
Rangers can beat Manchester United
Having had a poor season under Clement, which has left the Light Blues sitting 13 points off Celtic at the top of the Premiership table, the Belgian’s side have to give their all to their European games to ensure they still have something to play for this term.
Furthermore, although their away form has been their Achilles heel in the Premiership, the Gers have generally fared well in the Europa League, which should give them some momentum.
Travelling to Old Trafford will be a great occasion but with the troubles in the red half of Manchester both on and off the pitch, the home side will surely be lacking any intense atmosphere to spur them on to a victory.

Instead, the Light Blues have to take advantage of their opponents’ current situation and make sure they come away with a result that could send them above their opponents in the Europa League table.
In a campaign where too many sides have been ruthless against a struggling Rangers team, it is time for them to take advantage of someone else.
