Rangers ‘backed for double Ibrox deal’ as Rabbi Matondo nears Coventry move

Derek Ferguson is hopeful Rangers will bring in two new players once Rabbi Matondo completes his move to Coventry City.

Matondo is close to joining the English Championship club on an initial loan deal, which Coventry have the chance to make permanent in the summer [David Edgar, 22 January].

The Wales international is one of the higher earners at Ibrox, and Ferguson hopes the Gers can act quickly to find at least one replacement now his wages are off the books.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Rangers-mad pundit Ferguson said: “He’s been injured most of the time. What’s he done at Rangers? The one memory is that goal against Celtic. He’s been such a big disappointment.

In the pre-season he arrived, he got fans excited because of his pace and directness, but he’s never kicked on because of injuries. At times, he’s looked a guy who is lost in terms of his confidence.

Once he leaves the club, supporters will not be disappointed. He’s a big earner and once he’s taken off the wage bill, hopefully two others are brought in, so it’s a sensible decision.”

Rabbi Matondo set for Coventry City transfer

Matondo looked like being a massive asset to Rangers early on upon joining but, the odd moment of magic aside – including that Celtic goal – he has flattered to deceive far too often.

The winger has simply been unable to stay fit enough to enjoy a prolonged spell in the side, and the decision to get rid now makes perfect sense.

This is only a loan deal, granted, but hopefully he can get a run of games under his belt and earn himself a permanent contract back down south.

Rangers fans will not grieve the forward’s exit but, at the same time, everyone will wish him well.
