Lampard convinces player to quit Rangers for good – Sky Sports

Rabbi Matondo is swapping Rangers for Coventry City to play under Frank Lampard, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcasters reported via their live transfer blog (22 January, 2:54 pm) that Coventry are closing in on signing the 24-year-old on loan with an option to buy.

Matondo attracted interest from other EFL clubs, but Lampard’s presence at the Championship club has convinced him to move there instead.

Having gained experience playing for Manchester City’s academy and Schalke, Matondo’s move to Ibrox in 2022 invoked a lot of excitement.

However, the transfer has not worked out for both the club and player, with the Liverpool-born winger restricted to just six Scottish Premiership appearances this season.

Therefore, it makes sense for Matondo to seek a move away from the Glasgow giants, who also need to offload players to balance their books and possibly facilitate new signings.

He will be hopeful of getting his career back on track at Coventry under Lampard, who has been in charge of the Sky Blues since November.

After an inconsistent start, Lampard has now led Coventry to three consecutive wins, meaning Matondo is joining them at the right time.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen if Philippe Clement’s side intend to strengthen their attack following the Wales international’s exit.

They have only added Rafael Fernandes to their squad so far in this winter transfer window.
