Clement to solve ‘blindingly obvious’ Rangers issue by signing ‘superb’ defender

Rangers have been dealt a fairly poor hand in the 2024/25 season with things often not going their way.

The Gers may be second in the Scottish Premiership but it feels like they should be an awful lot closer to first-placed Celtic than the 13 points that currently separate them.

While there have been times when Philippe Clement’s men have seemed to be in decent form, those sorts of performances haven’t come often enough.

And, with the amount of defensive injuries they’ve recently suffered, it doesn’t feel like it’s going to get any easier for them any time soon.

That is, unless they acquire the services of free agent Timothy Fosu-Mensah in the winter transfer window [Wales Live, 21 January].

The former Manchester United man has been linked with an Ibrox switch and, due to his versatility, could end up being a perfect addition to the Belgian’s squad.

Why would Timothy Fosu-Mensah be good for Rangers?

Once described as “superb” by Stan Collymore, the Dutchman has been highly regarded since his career started.

The fact he can play at right-back, centre-back and even defensive midfield is just one of the many reasons why the former Bayer Leverkusen man could be an impressive addition to the Rangers squad.

He has had his fair share of injuries which has no doubt hindered his progress but even if the Ibrox outfit just chose to give him an initial six-month deal, they’d have extra cover and be able to decide whether the defender is worthy of a longer deal.

The fact he’s still only 27 years old also works in his favour as he still has plenty of years left and is right in his prime.

At the moment, it’s still unclear whether Rangers will make a move but if they do, it could help get their season back on track and solve a blindingly obvious issue Clement has had to contend with.
