Manchester United v Rangers: Hutton moots ‘huge’ upset at Old Trafford

Rangers could come away from their “huge” UEFA Europa League game against Manchester United at Old Trafford with a positive result, according to Alan Hutton.

Looking ahead to the game on Thursday (23 January), Hutton admitted that he has been unimpressed by the Red Devils in their 3-1 win against Southampton (16 January) and 3-1 loss against Brighton (19 January).

The former Gers defender believes Philippe Clement’s side can cause an upset over the Premier League giants if they sit back and hit them on the counter-attack.

“I watched the Southampton game and then I’ve seen the Brighton game, and I thought Southampton were the better team”, Hutton said on Premier Sports’ Scottish Football Social Club (20 January).

“Obviously, Amad Diallo gets a hat-trick, they kind of get away with it and then, even the Brighton game.

“Look, Rangers defensively… they are not going down to Old Trafford, the pressure will be on Manchester United, but it’s still a lot to deal with for the Rangers team.

“But, if they can defend well… and I think it might suit them, having to defend and then possibly hitting the counter. There might be space in behind them.

“Look, it’s going to be a huge game, there is no getting away from that. It is going to be difficult but fingers-crossed, you never know.”

Philippe Clement and Rangers to upset Manchester United at Old Trafford?

The season has not gone entirely according to plan for Rangers as they sit 13 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

However, there is probably not a better time to face Manchester United at Old Trafford than this and a win there would easily become the Light Blues’ biggest highlight of the campaign.

The Red Devils have had a torrid time under Ruben Amorim, who has won only six of his 15 games across all competitions since taking the reins in November.

Those include a penalty shootout win against Arsenal in the FA Cup, as well as victories over Bodo/Glimt and Viktoria Plzen.

It is also worth noting that United are likelier to lose than draw or win at the moment, having lost seven of their games under Amorim.

Therefore, Clement and Co must go to Old Trafford with the intention to claim all three points on Thursday.

Manchester United are there for the taking.
