Ianis Hagi could ‘demand big money’ before Rangers sale within months
Ianis Hagi could demand big money to sign a new contract at Rangers before eventually being sold, Craig Swan says.
The Daily Record journalist believes that in an ideal world, the Gers would agree on a new deal with the Romanian star and sell him in the summer transfer window.
While Swan expects the 26-year-old to want a decent amount as his contract expires in the summer, Keith Jackson feels he isn’t money-motivated, and the Light Blues could get lucky during discussions regarding fresh terms.
Speaking on Hotline Live (20 January), Swan said: “Hagi’s representatives are well within their rights to say we want big bucks. In an ideal world, you manage to somehow get him to agree to a reasonably low-wage deal, and then you could still sell him in the summer once you’ve tied him for two years. Clubs do that all the time.
“But unfortunately, I don’t think you can do that [with Hagi]. What happens now if there is a contract to be negotiated, he’s going to be able to demand top dollar.”
Jackson responded: “Do you know where they might just get a little bit lucky with Hagi is the character of the boy. Other players wouldn’t have reacted the way he’s responded. I genuinely think he’s happy, settled and enjoys being a Rangers player.
“That could win half a battle for them in terms of trying to sit him down and look at what the next stage is… And I don’t think he’s particularly money-motivated.”
Rangers should pay Ianis Hagi what he wants for new contract
The Glaswegian outfit should pay what Hagi wants to secure his future at Ibrox for the coming years.
Philippe Clement is lucky to still be in a job at the Bears, and the Romania international has been one of the reasons for his continuity in the dugout.
At the start of the season, it looked like the Belgian manager was out of his depth at the Gers, with fans demanding a change.
While Rangers supporters still aren’t fully behind the 50-year-old head coach, the upturn in form has certainly helped quell the noise around his future.
Hagi has been instrumental in the change of fortunes at Ibrox in recent months, adding creativity and dynamism to the attack.
The fans will be unable to see the 26-year-old ply his trade at Old Trafford on 23 January against Manchester United, but he will unarguably be a part of the Europa League squad if the Light Blues get to the knockout stages.
Patrick Stewart will evidently want the Bears to compete with Celtic in the Scottish Premiership and must work on keeping Hagi at the Glaswegian outfit to that end.
