Ianis Hagi ‘transfer stance shared’ after Rangers contract twist

Ianis Hagi is willing sit down and discuss terms over extending his stay at Rangers, according to the Daily Record.

The Scottish tabloid reported via its website (20 January) that while negotiations have yet to begin on a new contract, both parties are eager to see the Romanian international continue at Ibrox.

Philippe Clement recently revealed that Hagi’s contract expires at the end of the campaign after initially being expected to expire next year. While Rangers retain a one-year extension option, he will need to renew on reduced terms.

Hagi had looked on course to leave Glasgow in the winter transfer window but could complete a remarkable U-turn after overcoming a difficult period this year.

Rangers must tie down Ianis Hagi

The 26-year-old was frozen out of the first-team picture by Clement at the beginning of the season after a contract stand-off – he is now one of the most essential players in the squad.

He has shown outstanding commitment and determination to transform his fortunes at Ibrox and has found a rich vein of form in the Scottish Premiership at a pivotal time for Rangers.

Although Hagi has been mooted to end his stay in Glasgow and pursue a move to Serie A outfit Genoa, the Gers must learn from the summer’s mistakes and thwart any interest in his services.

The Light Blues allowed Connor Goldson, John Lundstram and Borna Barisic to walk out the door at Ibrox to fund a squad rebuild, which, in hindsight, has left the current squad significantly weaker than it was before.

All season, the monumental gap between Rangers and Celtic has been a hot topic of debate, and losing arguably their main creative outlet would enhance the gap even further.

Hagi has proven he can be a mainstay in the current side for years to come, and Clement should resist the urge to sell a valuable asset.

Instead, he should reward his commitment and build a new-look Rangers side around his creative brilliance.
