Ianis Hagi contract ‘numbers’ revealed with Rangers talks lined up

Philippe Clement isn’t sure what “numbers” Ianis Hagi has in mind if he were to sign a new deal with Rangers with the Romanian able to leave Ibrox for free in the summer.

Hagi finds himself out of contract in the summer having been mooted for a winter exit from Rangers and Clement has revealed that he will be free to leave in the summer.

The Romanian has found some form in recent weeks but talks over a new deal remain stalled with Clement claiming there “will be discussions” over his future.

Speaking to the press, as quoted by Rangers Review [18 January], the Belgian said: “[Hagi] will be at the end of his contract at the end of the season, so there will be negotiations around that, if it’s possible or not.

“I don’t have a clue what numbers Ianis has in mind or the club. So that’s [for] discussions between them. Of course. I’m happy with what he’s been performing. I knew him already from before, there was the situation before the season that was out of my hands.”

Rangers cannot afford to lose Ianis Hagi

The Light Blues have endured a fairly dismal season having exited the Scottish League Cup while finding themselves 13 points behind Celtic in the league.

It leaves Rangers with the Scottish Cup and the Europa League as their two real remaining chances of silverware but if they are to achieve success through those means, retaining Hagi will be crucial.

Of course, that’s just in the short term, but the long-term future of Hagi is just as important as if the Gers were to lose him, they’d be losing their only real source of creativity.

Rangers need to be building for the present and for the future and the Romanian playmaker fits the bill for both scenarios and it’s quite remarkable to consider how little he has featured this season.

While the current priority has to be on signing winter reinforcements, attentions need to turn relatively swiftly to negotiating a new deal for Hagi.
