Rangers title verdict dropped amid ‘Appalling’ admission

Rangers would still be in the Scottish Premiership title race were it not for an “appalling” record away from Ibrox, Daily Mail journalist John McGarry has said.

The Gers have only dropped two home points all season, albeit their first two home fixtures were played at Hampden Park, and outclassed Aberdeen 3-0 at Ibrox on Wednesday (15 January).

Conversely, they have just three wins on the road all campaign and failed to win their past four away league matches.

McGarry opined for the Scottish Daily Mail‘s print edition (16 January, page 71), that had they been able to address their travel sickness they would be right in a title picture that now looks well beyond them with Celtic 13 points clear at the top.

“The main thing which has sustained Philippe Clement at Rangers this season has been the comfort at home.

“Just one blip at Ibrox ensured the Belgian actually approached this assignment with an identical record to Celtic in Glasgow.

“If only he could have addressed an appalling run on the road, hopes of the title wouldn’t have vanished along with the Christmas decorations.”

Rangers travel sickness has cost them big time

Rangers’ away-day woes are sort of emblematic of the chaos under Philippe Clement this season.

If you were to look at their home form in isolation, you would say only two dropped points at home is a fantastic achievement especially considering the issues they had with the Copland Road Stand last summer.

But away from home it is an altogether different story and, frankly, it is unforgivable how abysmal this side has been on the road and it is a massive for Clement to overcome.

To be 13 points adrift of Celtic (don’t forget it was 15 before the midweek round of games) is just not a scenario that can be accepted.

Clement has avoided the sack so far probably because of the finances needed to sack him. At some point the Gers do need to stick with a manager but the Belgian is doing little to consistently prove he should be that man.
