Cyriel Dessers makes Ibrox exit admission, Rangers transfer ‘could be imminent’

Rangers must be ready to seal Cyriel Dessers’ exit quickly and imminently after he admitted that he could be on his way out of Ibrox.

Speaking in an interview in the Netherlands, Dessers admitted a transfer away from Govan could be imminent, after losing his place in Philippe Clement’s starting XI to Moroccan youngster Hamza Igamane.

Igamane and Dessers are level on 13 goals so far this term and both scored in Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Aberdeen, but with sides on the continent keen on Dessers, the Gers could soon sanction his departure.

In quotes reported by The Scottish Sun (16 January), Dessers said: “It is difficult – I don’t know what my situation is now. I can imagine that Rangers might want to earn something from me this month.

“January is a difficult window. Clubs that are doing well probably also have a striker who is performing well. We’ll just have to wait and see.

“I’m at a great club, but I’m 30-years-old and want to play every week, preferably at Rangers – if there are different feelings about that internally, then we need to talk.”

“I do have a certain price and there are only a few clubs that can pay that. In any case, I want to play in a serious competition, for the prizes. The fire is still burning.”

Cyriel Dessers Rangers transfer best move for all parties

A decent offer could tempt the Ibrox hierarchy into selling their number nine this month, but it remains to be seen if any bid will be forthcoming.

The Gers are a club in desperate need of cash having lost over £17million over the course of the last year, and it’s been made clear to Clement that he’ll only be able to spend what he brings in this month.

Dessers’ 13 goals this season haven’t been enough to prevent him dropping to third choice in the striking ranks behind Igamane and Danilo, with the latter’s latest injury potentially saving him from the exit door.

However, should an offer north of his £3.3m price tag come in from another club before 3 February, it’s likely the higher-ups at Ibrox will give the move a green light to help Clement strengthen in other areas.

The Belgian has plenty of problems to address in his backline at present with midfield reinforcements also needed, and it may take the departure of Dessers to facilitate additions coming the other way.
