Boyd and Sutton clash after Rangers win v Aberdeen – ‘Embarrassing’

Kris Boyd and Chris Sutton clashed about Aberdeen’s season after Rangers secured a 3-0 win on Wednesday.

The Gers took three points at Ibrox on 15 January as an early strike from Hamza Igamane was added to by added-time goals from Leon Balogun and Cyriel Dessers.

This marked the Dons’ eighth defeat in their last 12 games which has seen pressure pile on Jimmy Thelin in recent weeks.

Boyd told Sky Sports Football (15 January) that questions have got to be asked of the Swede at Pittodrie after another damming result.

He said: “This run is getting to the stage where you’ve got to ask some serious questions.”

Sutton interrupted: “What do you mean by serious?”

Snapping back, Boyd replied: “Just let me speak.

“Barry Robson lost his job, he won four out of 14, this is no wins in 12 now for Jimmy Thelin. They started the season really well, there might be an acceptance from Aberdeen fans to clap their team off but that was embarrassing tonight.

“There’s something not right at Aberdeen right now, they look so passive.”

The former Celtic striker didn’t agree as he said: “You have to look at the season as a whole up until now, are they ahead of where we all thought they would be at the start of the season? I think they are.”

It is fair to say that there are problems for Aberdeen but the Light Blues won’t care after eventually securing a positive win in Govan.

Given that Philippe Clement has come under fire himself, he needed to maintain his side’s positive home record against a side in desperate need of a win.

The Belgian was able to do that but it is fair to say this has only worsened the situation for his 46-year-old counterpart on the Dons’ bench.

Thelin does have credit in the bank in Pittodrie after a terrific start to the campaign which saw his side be the nearest challengers to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

This included a win against the Ibrox club in October which represented the positive direction the club was going in AB24.

Now things have hit the fan and have reached a point which splitting opinion across Scotland but it will be interesting to see how the defeat in Govan is viewed by their hierarchy.
