Rangers v Aberdeen: BBC pundit reacts to controversy with fans furious
James McFadden believes that Kevin Clancy made the right decision to not hand Rangers a penalty against Aberdeen.
There was a high boot inside the Dons penalty area with Nicolas Raskin and Kristers Tobers competing for the ball at Ibrox on 15 January at Ibrox.
Clancy waved off protests and the VAR agreed with his decision which saw the Ibrox faithful booing the decision as the hosts won 3-0.
Speaking on the SPFL world feed on 15 January at 9:10 pm, McFadden, a BBC pundit, said: “I think Tobers gets to the ball first. Certainly, you can see it from that angle. Right decision.”
Rangers fans were clearly not happy with Kevin Clancy
The call by Clancy, backed by VAR, not to award Gers a penalty highlights the delicate nature of refereeing in high-stakes games.
McFadden’s analysis supports the view that the correct decision was made, emphasising that Tobers reached the ball first.
This incident, however, is reflective of a broader narrative this season where, after Gers benefited from numerous penalties last year, there seems to be a noticeable shift in officiating.
Critics might argue that referees are now more cautious or even reluctant to award penalties to the Ibrox outfit, possibly influenced by the backlash from previous seasons.
The reaction from the fans was possibly to this fact rather than the decision itself, which seemed too soft to be given a penalty.

This perceived shift could be due to various factors, including increased scrutiny of referees’ decisions or a genuine effort to balance out past calls, demonstrating how such decisions can swing with public and media perception.
