Rangers takeover: £22m update emerges from Ibrox in ‘Huge’ development

Rangers face a lack of interested parties prepared to fund a full takeover at Ibrox, Stephen McGowan has shared.

The Scottish Daily Mail journalist, writing in its print edition (14 January, pg 74) admitted that any new owners would also face growing FFP restrictions at Ibrox.

Rangers fans are now consistently campaigning against the directors and current board, but their £22m in loans are also a huge takeover barrier.

McGowan wrote: “Where you cannot fault the directors is their personal financial commitment, which presently stands at £22million in loans.

“This sum, as much as anything, represents a huge barrier to the kind of regime change many fans would now like to see.

“The lack of interested parties prepared to buy out the board and operate under increasingly tight FFP restrictions is another.”

Rangers takeover update at Ibrox

There appears to be no end in sight right now for some very concerned fans.

After Patrick Stewart backed Philippe Clement on the pitch, despite some shocking recent results, it appears the board is going nowhere either.

With outstanding loans likely standing in the way of fresh investors coming in, that added cost could be the safety blanket those figures need to stay in place.

Stewart and Fraser Thornton only recently arrived, but pressure is immediately placed on your shoulders when sitting at the top of Rangers Football Club.

It is already an outrage that the Scottish Premiership title is basically in Celtic’s hands after only just entering 2025, but that is the state of things right now.

External investment was seen as more likely back in October, rather than a full takeover, but even that hasn’t happened in the months that have followed (Chris Jack).

Fans have their concerns, rightly so, but there looks to be no immediate fix coming in Govan.
