Rangers booked Kristers Tobers flights before Aberdeen transfer
Rangers had booked flights for Kristers Tobers years ago before his recent transfer to Aberdeen, according to Gordon Young.
The former FK Liepaja manager revealed that the centre-back was supposed to spend a week on trial at Ibrox when he was 17 before an injury derailed his plans.
The Gers were interested in the 24-year-old back in 2017, but the defender is now at Pittodrie after completing a move in the winter window.
Speaking to the Scottish Sun (13 January), Young said: “I mentioned him to a few teams down south, and Sheffield United were one of the others showing an interest.
“Up here, Rangers were keen, to the point his flights were booked, and it was all arranged that he would spend a week on trial in Glasgow, where he’d also take in a first-team match.”
Rangers in desperate need of January defender transfer
Tobers made his way through the youth ranks at Liepaja before moving to Lechia Gdansk, Grasshopper Club Zurich and eventually Aberdeen.
The Light Blues look in desperate need of a centre-back, considering the number of injury issues in defence.
John Souttar, arguably the Bears’ best defender, has been sidelined for a few weeks, and Leon Balogun is also unavailable.
Dujon Sterling had been deputising at centre-back recently, but the 25-year-old has missed the last two fixtures after picking up an injury in the 3-3 draw with Hibernian on 5 January.

Rangers have counted on Clinton Nsiala in the last two fixtures, and the 20-year-old has impressed many with his performances.
The French youngster has partnered Robin Propper at the back, who hasn’t had the best of starts to life at the Glaswegian outfit, coming under pressure for his poor displays in the current campaign.
Tobers made his debut for Aberdeen as they drew against Hearts on 12 January, and it remains to be seen whether he’ll be on the pitch at Ibrox on Wednesday (15 January).
