Rangers are trying to rectify their mistake in the domestic transfer market with their interest in Lyall Cameron, Michael Stewart says.

The pundit believes the Gers have missed out on better players than the Dundee star in recent years.

Stewart approved the Light Blues' move for the Scottish midfielder due to the potential low-cost finances involved.

Speaking on Premier Sports' Scottish Football Social Club (13 January), the 43-year-old said: "What it smacks to me of is the club recognising that they have ignored the domestic market too much.

"With the greatest respect to Cameron, I don't think he's nearly as good as some of the guys they've missed out on in the last four or five years. So it's like they're recognising their mistakes and looking to rectify it with someone who perhaps isn't at the level of some of those people they've missed out on.

"The beauty of the domestic market is, with somebody like Cameron, they wouldn't be having to spend a fortune, even talking about wages as well."

Rangers need to be smart with Lyall Cameron transfer

The Bears will undoubtedly be getting one of the most prominent prospects in the Scottish Premiership if they can complete a move for Cameron.

After establishing himself in Dundee's senior side a few years back, the youngster has become influential for Tony Docherty's team.

The Glaswegian outfit haven't had the best of seasons under Philippe Clement, but the Belgian manager has certainly been able to get the best out of them at Ibrox.

Rangers have seen their fortunes change after the 50-year-old made changes in the middle of the park.

Connor Barron was a key player for Clement during the first half of the campaign but has seen his influence dwindle.

With Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande forming a solid partnership in the engine room, adding Cameron to the mix would be tricky.

Barron has recently struggled, so it wouldn't be far-fetched to assume the Dundee midfielder would also find game time hard to come by at Ibrox unless there are a few summer departures.

To return to the top, the Gers need to be smart with their recruitment and maintain the balance of the squad.
