Andy Halliday has told Rangers to secure the services of Dundee midfielders Lyall Cameron and Josh Mulligan.

As their deals at Dundee run out at the end of the season, Halliday admits he would seal their services on a pre-contract agreement if he was at Gers.

The Ibrox outfit are understood to be aware of Cameron and his potential availability [Four Lads Had A Dream].

He told Open Goal on 7 January: “[Rangers] just need to prepare a squad, whether it’s depth, quality, line up players for the summer and try to do as much business as they can.

“Pre contracts! Two players I would sign right now; Lyall Cameron and Josh Mulligan. Honestly, I would sign the two of them.

“Mulligan is an athletic monster, I am signing him. I am signing the two of them on pre-contracts.

“[Koppen] mentioned homegrown talent. See your Mulligans and Lyall Camerons, I’m not saying signing them is going to win Rangers the league. But see what [Luke] McCowan is doing for Celtic, get them two boys for proper squad depth, they will play games and do well for you.”

Rangers need to make smart transfer decisions

Rather than overpaying for players not proven in the SPFL, it does make a lot of sense to sign two midfielders who are young and proven and also available on a free.

If they want one of them in January, they could look to reach an agreement with Dundee who'd be willing to let go of one of them for a discounted fee.

While Gers are aware of Cameron, signing Mulligan also makes a lot of sense.

He's a two-time league winner, albeit in the lower divisions, but he has shown at Dundee he's ready to become a serious player in the SPFL.

Signing two midfielders may seem a tad redundant but it does make sense to have depth and Mulligan himself is capable of playing on the right as well in his defence.

He could be a utility player at Ibrox, much like Dujon Sterling currently is, and he will arrive for very little or nothing at all if the club wait till the summer.

Hopefully, Nils Koppen has made progress in bringing in some players through the door in January.
