Keith Jackson launches ‘stale’ Rangers rant, wants board to be ‘obliterated’
Rangers have gone “stale” under the reign of their current board, according to Keith Jackson.
Reflecting on the Union Bears’ walkout protest during the Gers’ 3-1 win against St. Johnstone at Ibrox on Sunday (12 January), Jackson admitted that he agrees with the supporters’ stance although he is not in favour of the ultras culture in football.
The Daily Record journalist added that there is a “bowling club mentality” at Rangers that needs to be “obliterated”, but pointed out that the majority of the Light Blues fans are not as militant as their Celtic counterparts.
“I’m not a big fan of ultras and the ultra culture, but these guys are actually right”, Jackson said on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (13 January).
“Rangers do require a regime change, it needs a recalibration. The sort of bowling club mentality at the top of the staircase has to be obliterated.
“Rangers need something new, they need something fresh, they need something contemporary, modern, outward-looking – all the things that this Rangers board isn’t.
“So, I can completely get why the fans have got to this point, but then, you’ve got this kind of side issue that Rangers fans, by nature, aren’t a very militant bunch. Celtic fans are more militant.
“You kind of get the feeling that there is a vast majority of Rangers fans just want to go along and as long as their team is winning on a Saturday afternoon on the pitch, everything is hunky-dory.
“But, the young crew are clearly disenfranchised now for a variety of reasons, but it feels stale, Rangers feel stale.”
Keith Jackson is right about Rangers after Ibrox protest
A section of fans raised “sack the board chants” before walking out of Ibrox as a part of the protest on Sunday.
However, many remained in their seats and even booed those who left, thus proving Jackson’s statement about the Gers fans not being as militant as Celtic supporters true.
There is no denying that the management of the club has left much to be desired and Rangers’ position 15 points behind in the Scottish Premiership table is a reflection of that.
Therefore, it is high time major changes are brought about to the hierarchy at Ibrox.
However, that would require unity among the fans, which was evidently not present at the weekend as the two sections of supporters argued between them.
It remains to be seen if the Rangers fan can put such differences aside and demand a significant change at the top of the staircase as Jackson said.
Such changes are necessary if the Glasgow giants want to compete on all fronts both on home soil and in Europe.
