Leon King Ibrox future now set in stone amid new Rangers transfer update
Leon King has been continuously overlooked by Philippe Clement despite Rangers’ frustrating injury crisis at Ibrox.
Since graduating from Auchenhowie in 2020, the 20-year-old centre-back has made just 38 appearances for the Light Blues, with only one of those coming in the current Scottish Premiership campaign.
King replaced Dujon Sterling for the final 20 minutes of the 3-3 draw with Hibernian earlier this month, being given his first competitive minutes since May.
Despite Neraysho Kasanwirjo, John Souttar, James Tavernier and Sterling all stuck on the sidelines through injury, Clement has continued to choose against the young talent.
Supporters are only becoming more and more baffled by the 20-year-old’s treatment, which suggests it is only a matter of time before he leaves Ibrox for good, and the latest transfer update would suggest the same.
Rangers to sign Burnley defender to solve current injury crisis
According to Anel Avdic, the Gers are now in talks to sign Burnley star Hjalmar Ekdal on loan, though they do face competition from QPR, Stoke City, Sampdoria and Empoli.
The 26-year-old, who was dubbed “intelligent” by former Clarets boss Vincent Kompany [Burnley Express], has only made 19 appearances since arriving at Turf Moor from Djurgarden in January 2023.
Much like King, Ekdal is in desperate need of minutes on the pitch, and with Clement seemingly lacking preferred choices in defence, he could be the ideal January signing.

However, if the Light Blues can strike a deal for the Swedish international, it only spells bad news for King’s future at Ibrox, who is already struggling to find a place in the first team.
That would be a massive shame for the Gers, highlighting one of the biggest issues that Patrick Stewart needs to address at Ibrox, but it seems too late for anything to change for the young defender.
In other Rangers news, Mark Guidi has named the “obvious candidate” to replace Philippe Clement at Ibrox.
