Clement ‘finished at Rangers’, consultants hired at Ibrox – ‘Atrocious’

Gary Keown believes Rangers should sack Philippe Clement as CEO Patrick Stewart hires consultants to conduct a review at Ibrox.

The former Manchester United chief has offered his backing of the Belgian head coach with a “root and branch review of the entire football department” planned to start on Monday [Sky Sports].

It is safe to say that this hasn’t gone down well with Keown in his Scottish Mail on Sunday column (12 January, page 100) who has slammed the decision-making from the hierarchy in Govan.

He said: “What does Patrick Stewart really expect this root and branch review of the football department at Rangers to throw up other than the fact you can’t possibly allow a manager to carry on when he’s 18 points behind Celtic in early January having managed to win just three away games in the league out of 11?

“That the new CEO and the board he now represents seem willing to let this catastrophe of a season just play out, with consultants being brought in at extra expense which sums up where the Ibrox outfit are.

“It is as clear as a bell that Philippe Clement’s time as head coach is up. It’s a root and branch review of the atrocious decision-making by those in the boardroom that’s required more than anything else.”

Philippe Clement could face sack amid Patrick Stewart Rangers review

The Belgian hit a high point of his Light Blues reign against Celtic in recent weeks but this spike in positivity has been surrounded by plenty of frustration.

The 3-0 Old Firm win at Ibrox felt like a turning point in the Scottish Premiership with a view to potentially mounting some sort of a challenge in the second half of the season.

That now feels like an impossibility after back-to-back draws against Hibernian and Dundee which just added fuel to the fire building against the Gers’ head coach.

With a clash against St Johnstone coming up on Sunday (12 January), the former Monaco boss needs a positive result or risks his job.

Stewart is conducting a review and despite offering his support for the manager, results will surely begin to grate on the CEO if they don’t take a positive turn.

The clash at Ibrox could prove vital for the Belgian to prove himself and put the hierarchy from pulling the sack trigger for at least another week.
