Philippe Clement sack: Rangers short-term hire mooted despite backing
Kris Boyd says Rangers cannot keep sacking managers but must do so until they find the right one as pressure continues on Philippe Clement.
Speaking live on Sky Sports Football (X, 11 January), the former Gers striker admitted it is unsustainable to keep going through new managers, but insists it is crucial to identify the right candidate.
Clement has only secured one win in Rangers’ last five – ironically the 3-0 hammering of Celtic at Ibrox on 2 January – but CEO Patrick Stewart has publicly backed the boss, despite calls for a possible short-term appointment.
Responding to Stewart, Boyd said: “You can’t keep changing the manager, but you have to find the right one. Right now, there’s nothing to suggest [Clement is the right one].
“Rangers look broken. I agree that you can’t keep chopping and changing through the season, but maybe give someone the interim [job] between now and the end of the season, and then look from there.
“But that’s not going to be the case, he’s been backed.”
Rangers to make short-term new appointment?
Stewart has bought both himself and Clement some time in the shorter term with his recent address to the supporters.
However, as expected, it has not gone down well. Many Gers fans recognise the Belgian is not the only issue at Ibrox right now, but a lot of responsibility naturally lies on his shoulders.
Some quarters expect Clement to remain under huge pressure and see his job on tenterhooks, with St Johnstone the next visitor to Ibrox on Sunday (12 January) as the Scottish Premiership’s bottom side.

Failure to win that game would bring a whole new level of pressure on the boss and his players, as the Gers are marooned in second place.
January is also a huge month in terms of ironing out the squad overhaul which had begun in the summer, with a need to be careful with funds following considerable losses.
In other Rangers news, Stewart also opens up on planned transfer business this month.
