Philippe Clement sack: Derek McInnes could be set for Rangers appointment
Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes is the “obvious candidate” to replace Philippe Clement as pressure continues to grow at Rangers, Mark Guidi has said.
With pressure growing on the Belgian, and the Rangers Supporters Association calling for him to be sacked, the 53-year-old has been regularly linked with a move to Ibrox.
Having played for the Gers between 1995 and 2000, McInnes is seen as the most suitable replacement, though it is unclear whether he would leave Rugby Park at such short notice.
Speaking via the Go Radio Football Show [10 January], Guidi said: “Derek McInnes would have to be on the shortlist. Of course, the new chief executive who’ll have a big say on the appointment of the next manager has most of his working life down south.
“So he might have contacts down south, someone who might have an idea. But if you’re looking for someone who knows the Scottish game inside out, can work on a budget, and ring every ounce out of players, the obvious candidate is Derek McInnes.”
Rangers to switch Clement for McInnes in a heartbeat
The Ibrox faithful would absolutely love for McInnes to be the next manager, especially with Clement continuing to cause frustration in Glasgow.
Due to recent results, instead of closing the gap on league leaders Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, the Gers are now 15 points behind their Old Firm rivals.
This is, of course, absolutely unacceptable for the Light Blues at this point in the league campaign, with supporters calling for the manager’s job for the past few months.
With spells at St Johnston, Bristol City, Aberdeen and Kilmarnock during his coaching career, McInnes has plenty of experience to help lead the Gers to better pastures, but he would be walking into a tough challenge.

Although Patrick Stewart is now in charge at Ibrox, the financial situation remains the same, with many deadweights still in the squad, such as Cyriel Dessers, Rabbi Matondo and Ridvan Yilmaz.
Any new manager would need to be backed in the transfer window, but with limited funds available, McInnes might think twice about swapping Rugby Park for Ibrox right now.
