Dessers to be ‘icing on the cake’ as Rangers transfer news revealed by Di Marzio

Cyriel Dessers joining Cagliari from Rangers would be the “icing on the cake” for the Serie A club, according to Edoardo Mecca.

The Italian radio broadcaster posted on X (10 January) his complimentary view of the Gers striker in response to Gianluca di Marzio’s report the previous day that Cagliari remain interested in acquiring his services, as well as fellow Serie A outfit Empoli.

Dessers could be set for a January exit from Rangers, where he has fallen out of favour under Philippe Clement, and an opportunity to test himself in the Italian top flight could be approaching.

Replying to di Marzio’s post, Mecca said: “Dessers would be the icing on the cake.”

Dessers close to fresh start away from Rangers?

With Dessers now behind both Hamza Igamane and Danilo in Clement’s pecking order and having turned 30 last month, it could be time for him to seek pastures new.

The Nigerian international has provided a steady level of service in front of goal for Rangers, but has conversely been slammed for his inconsistency in taking chances at times.

With a potential opening in Serie A knocking, Dessers would be daft in his current situation not to consider the Italian switch, and he may be able to hit the ground running and find himself constantly appreciated.

Dessers is a confidence player, who thrives off an arm around his shoulder and being encouraged to fulfil his ability. If he can strike that feeling in a new environment – plus pocket the Gers a tidy sum while they can get it – it could be a sensible move all round.

Rangers are currently focused on returning to winning ways in the Scottish Premiership having been held by Dundee on Thursday (9 January), taking on St Johnstone at Ibrox on Sunday (12 January).

In other Rangers news, Clement is set for crunch talks with the Ibrox hierarchy.
