Chris Sutton calls out Patrick Stewart developments at Rangers today

Chris Sutton has called out Patrick Stewart for a “cop-out” decision to assess Rangers over the coming weeks at Ibrox.

Stewart announced he will be making a longer-term assessment of the club over the next three months, backing Philippe Clement in his role as manager on 11 January.

Fans at Ibrox have been incensed by recent performances and many believe Clement is not the man to take the club further on the pitch, which Sutton questioned.

Speaking with Kris Boyd live on Sky Sports Football (X, 11 January), Sutton asked: “Is that a cop-out?

“Because he’s been in a couple of weeks now and what he’s trying to do is buy himself time, but Rangers fans ultimately want him to be more decisive.”

Rangers to keep Philippe Clement in post

Stewart’s address to the supporters has certainly not gone down well with sections of the Rangers fanbase, who will be reluctantly agreeing with Sutton.

The CEO’s 18 years at Manchester United have likely fed into his mindset here, with United having chopped and changed managers regularly since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

Clement has days where matters look promising as if he will be able to unlock a new level of progress at Ibrox, with the Old Firm thrashing of Celtic a prime example.

However, the Gers have faltered both before and since, and the Belgian must take the flak as much as anyone for what has developed on the pitch.

Next up at Ibrox is a Scottish Premiership fixture with bottom-placed St Johnstone, who the Light Blues scraped past in the reverse fixture and who visit Glasgow without a win in eight. Failure to win would cause uproar on Sunday (12 January).
