Rangers to use Dessers to raise funds as move made for £15,000-a-week ace

Rangers may look to sell Cyriel Dessers to raise funds to pay the wages of Serbian midfielder Sasa Zdjelar, according to Stephen McGowan.

The Scottish Daily Mail reporter revealed on page 79 of its print edition on Friday (10 January) that Dessers – who is attracting interest from Europe – could be sold off as a makeweight for the £15,000-per-week wages of Zdjelar.

The midfield man, 29, is currently at CSKA Moscow but can be acquired on a free transfer after FIFA granted foreign players the right to suspend their contracts with Russian clubs.

Rangers could sell Dessers to sign Zdjelar

It is probably now commonly agreed that Dessers needs a fresh start away from Rangers.

The 30-year-old has already scored 12 this season to add to his 22 last term, but has again frustrated with his lack of consistency in front of goal and has now fallen down Philippe Clement’s pecking order at Ibrox.

Still a forward with plenty to offer, Dessers has seen a potentially excellent opportunity open up for him in Serie A, with Cagliari reported to be interested in a January loan-to-buy move (Centotrentuno, 8 January).

As for Zdjelar, who has nine senior caps for Serbia, the appeal for his pursuit in the middle of the season is that he is available on a free transfer – but of course, the wages are a potential stumbling block for a club looking to heavily trim its wage bill at the end of 2024.

Zdjelar turns 30 in March and has 96 appearances for CSKA under his belt, having played 180 times for Partizan Belgrade beforehand.
