Clement ‘doomed at Rangers’ as Ibrox chiefs set to hit ‘self-destruct’ button

Philippe Clement is “doomed at Rangers” as the Ibrox giants continue to suffer from poor leadership, according to Graham Spiers.

Clement, 50, is under huge pressure after his Gers side fell 15 points behind first-placed Celtic in the Scottish Premiership with a 1-1 draw at Dundee on Thursday night (9 January).

The Light Blues have now won just one of their last five league games – which was a 3-0 win over Celtic – and the away fans made it clear at Dens Park this week that they are extremely unhappy with the Belgian’s leadership.

Sky Sports News have since reported that Clement has continued to take training at Auchenhowie. However, The Herald journalist Spiers feels as though his sack is now inevitable – even though it might not be the right decision.

“Clement is doomed at Rangers,” said Spiers via his personal X account on Friday morning (10 January).

“Too few people willing to see he is a gifted coach trying to rebuild at a chronically mismanaged club.

“So Clement gets sacked, the next sucker comes in, and he too is binned during a slump. On it goes, almost prescribed Rangers self-destruction…”

When will Rangers sack Philippe Clement?

We’ve seen in England in the last week how clubs can go different ways about sacking their managers.

West Ham were pretty distasteful in allowing Julen Lopetegui to continue to take training while behind the scenes, they were chatting away with Graham Potter.

Lopetegui’s demise was played out very publicly and was completely out of order.

And then there was Everton, who sacked Sean Dyche out of the blue just hours before they were due to kick-off against Peterborough in the FA Cup on Thursday night.

Rangers could axe Clement at the drop of a hat. However, this has dragged on for so long now that it’s unlikely that anything will happen too quickly.

Ultimately, the club’s league season is over. They’ll finish second – easily.

But there’s still a Scottish Cup and a Europa League campaign that the Light Blues could do well in.

Clement has proven that he can do well in cup competitions.

He won the Premier Sports Cup last season and was runner-up this term. He reached the final of the Scottish Cup final last term and also the round of 16 in the Europa League.

That’s not bad going for a manager of a team so illy-equipped to take on Celtic, let alone some of the best teams in Europe’s second-biggest competition.

Maybe the Gers keep him around for now to see how he fares in the cup and in the continent?

In other Rangers news, the Gers are hunting a deal for the “best defender” in his league after he was turned away by an SPFL rival last year.
