Philippe Clement beyond redemption at Rangers as new sack verdict shared

Philippe Clement is “beyond redemption” in the minds of some Rangers fans after what has happened this season, Alasdair Lamont has said.

The Belgian has the Gers sitting second in the Scottish Premiership but the fact that there’s a 13-point gap between themselves and first-placed Celtic shows how poor they’ve been this season.

They may have beaten their arch-rivals 3-0 in the most recent Old Firm derby but that sort of form has only been shown on occasion this term.

Writing in his weekly column for the BBC Sport website (8 January) BBC Scotland journalist Lamont shared his thoughts on where the future of the 50-year-old could lie.

“While there is rarely a dull moment when it comes to the affairs of Rangers Football Club, the month ahead – on-field and off-field – could be worth getting the popcorn in for,” he wrote.

“It started in typically unpredictable fashion with the fabulous win over Celtic being followed by another away-day slip-up at Easter Road, with Philippe Clement’s side showing just how good and how fragile they can be over the course of those two games.

“It was the results immediately prior to the Celtic game against St Mirren and Motherwell that had Clement’s critics renewing their calls for the Belgian to be replaced. In the minds of some, he is beyond redemption”.

Philippe Clement needs to find a way to get Rangers to consistently perform to a high standard

While there have been times in the 2024/25 season such as in their 1-1 Europa League draw against Tottenham and their 3-0 win over Celtic in the Scottish Premiership when the Gers have proven their worth, it feels like more should be coming from Clement’s men on a consistent basis.

Many have called for the head of the Belgian due to the way that Rangers have performed but in actual fact, it’s been the players that have often let the 50-year-old down.

If the former Club Brugge boss wants to keep his role beyond the end of the season, he’s going to have to find a way to turn things around quickly otherwise it could cause the premature end of his tenure.

At the moment, nothing is set in stone of course but with the fanbase split about whether to keep him on or relieve him of his duties, Clement is going to have to prove sooner rather than later why he’s the right man for the job.

In other Rangers news, the Glasgow-based outfit have made “contact” for the transfer of a centre-back already.
