Rangers transfers: Shock twist emerges on former Celtic ace Filip Benkovic

Filip Benkovic, an SPFL winner with Celtic in 2018/19 has been mooted as a potential option for Rangers in January, according to the Daily Record.

The news outlet reported on 7 January named the 27-year-old Croatia international as one of five transfer game changers for the Ibrox outfit.

This comes after Gers are keen on signing a defender this month amid the injury crisis at the club.

Rangers fans may not be fully convinced on Filip Benkovic

The Croatia international has been a free agent since the start of the season and that’s pretty strange for someone who should be at his peak.

Defenders usually hit their prime in their late 20s and Benkovic, who was tipped for great things a few years ago, clearly has not been on the radar of title-challenging sides.

Gers do need a defender and in theory, the Croatian might make sense, but the Celtic connection may be too hard to ignore.

Fans would not want someone who won the league title with the Hoops a few years ago – under Brendan Rodgers – who’s once again their manager.

However, if Nils Koppen and Philippe Clement believe that he can strengthen the playing eleven, this is a cost-effective deal that the club could consider.

Only time will tell whether or not Benkovic will don the blue at Ibrox but it is imperative Gers sign a new defender.

In other Rangers news, a Gers player is now surely on his way out of Ibrox as the club have readied a move for his replacement.
