Rangers news: Huge boost emerges to seal Grant Hanley transfer

Rangers appear to be handed a potential boost in securing the services of Norwich City defender Grant Hanley.

It’s understood that a deal is there to be done to bring the 33-year-old back to Ibrox in the January transfer window. [Daily Record, 7 January]

Sun journalist Alan Nixon claimed that Blackburn were looking at the Scotland international but the Lancashire Telegraph reported on 6 January that Rovers are now not expected to sign Hanley in January.

This takes out competition for Gers and they can look to tempt Hanley to return to Ibrox and help with the defensive crisis.

Rangers can take the next step to sign Grant Hanley

Given the injury issues at Ibrox, Gers’ next steps would likely involve initiating formal discussions with Norwich City or Hanley’s representatives to negotiate a transfer.

Considering the 33-year-old’s contract expires in the summer of 2025, Norwich might be open to a bargain deal as well to avoid losing him for free.

Rangers would need to present an attractive offer, possibly focusing on a modest transfer fee given the Scotland international’s age and contract situation, or even a pre-contract agreement if feasible.

Additionally, they would need to discuss personal terms with Hanley, emphasising the opportunity for regular first-team football and the chance to return to a club where he has a history from his youth days.
