Rangers need to make McGinn eat his words after what he said

Rangers have had a poor season so far although Philippe Clement seems to be a lucky man as he remains in his job as manager despite a below-par campaign.

In the Belgian’s defence, off the pitch events have not made things easy for the Gers and their struggles are reflected in their league position with Celtic 13 points away in the top spot.

With the January transfer window upon us, supporters will be hoping to see the necessary additions come through the door in order to boost the squad for the remainder of the season.

However, financial restrictions will stop the Light Blues from going too crazy and instead, Nils Koppen will have to be shrewd in his business as he looks to help strengthen Clement’s squad.

BBC pundit Stephen McGinn does not back the Rangers chief, though, and has suggested that the Gers will not be able to keep loan ace Vaclav Cerny beyond the summer because of the state of play at Ibrox.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show (7 January), McGinn compared the winger to former Gers loanee Abdallah Sima as he said: “Last year they had a forward who’s now scoring goals at Champions League level in Sima. He came and did well at Rangers. He goes without the club receiving any money.

“Cerny will be the same. He might move on in the summer to a higher profile league.”

Nils Koppen has to make Vaclav Cerny a priority at Rangers

Cerny has been a standout player for Clement’s side this season, despite a difficult campaign and you fear where the Gers would be without his input.

In 18 Scottish Premiership appearances, the 27-year-old has registered seven goals and two assists, showing his quality and if those around him lifted their standards too, he could surely be producing even more.

While Koppen can’t magically solve all of Rangers’ financial problems immediately, there does have to be a level of progress on the pitch in order to support the financial state off the pitch.

With this in mind, there is no excuse for the Belgian not to make sure Cerny’s current loan spell is converted to a permanent deal by the summer.

After scoring 16 goals in all competitions for the Light Blues, Sima left Ibrox after his loan spell and now has six goals across Ligue 1 and the Champions League for Brest.

Therefore, the Gers hierarchy has to look at mistakes that have been made prior if they are going to prove that they’ll bring a positive new era to Rangers.

In other Rangers news, a Gers player is now surely on his way out of Ibrox as the club have readied a move for his replacement.
