Rangers backed to complete Walter Smith style Jonny Evans deal

Scott McDermott believes Rangers should try and explore a short-term loan deal for Manchester United defender Jonny Evans in January.

The defender has recently been linked with an Ibrox switch due to the defensive injury crisis they’re currently going through as a potential player who could come in and help fill in the gaps.

Nikola Katic is another name who has been linked with a transfer to Glasgow as Philippe Clement’s January priority has been made evident.

Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (7 January), McDermott shared his thoughts on the Gers’ potential pursuit of the veteran defender and said it would be a deal in the mould of legendary Rangers manager Walter Smith.

“Evans would be a classic Walter Smith style [transfer], Evans would be an obvious one if you could get him short-term on loan,” he said.

“The vast experience, still operating at a really good level, of course, he’s not got the pace he once had but he still looks in great nick.

“Coming from Man United, even if it is short term I think that, look, if you’re not wanting to spend a lot of money, you wouldn’t imagine that would be too expensive to do.

“That for me was the one that I thought they would probably try and do just to get them over this period until they get Souttar and Balogun back.”

Jonny Evans could be a smart move by Philippe Clement for Rangers

If you’ve watched about 15 minutes of any Rangers game over the last couple of weeks, it’s clear to see that their defence can be a problem area at times.

While Balogun and Souttar are great options to have in the ranks, in their absence Robin Propper and Dujon Sterling have had to forge a makeshift partnership and one that’s not as solid as the aforementioned duo.

The title is now also long gone despite their 3-0 victory in the most recent Old Firm as the 13-point gap between the Rangers and Celtic is likely too much of a steep hill for them to climb.

At the moment, it seems that a centre-back is the only area that Clement is set to strengthen in January and while that’s good news in some ways, in others it feels like more new faces need to be brought in to bolster their ranks across the board.

Granted, nothing is yet set in stone but at the moment, it feels like things need to change at Ibrox otherwise they could find themselves in the shadows of their rivals longer than they’d like.
