Philippe Clement sack: Keith Jackson shares Dundee v Rangers ramifications

Patrick Stewart may be forced to take action with regard to Philippe Clement should Rangers drop points against Dundee, believes Keith Jackson.

Gers take on Dundee at Dens Park on Thursday, 9 January, on the back of some abysmal away form which sees them 13 points behind Celtic.

If Gers fail to pick up the three points, a retrospective long-term look may be taken at how the Belgian is faring with regards to his sacking.

Jackson wrote in the Daily Record on 8 January: “Drop more points in Dundee, however, and the man in charge of making the big decisions [Stewart] may feel compelled to take a wider, more long-term retrospective look at this team’s direction of travel over the last year or so.

“And, should he choose to do that, Stewart may notice it’s been punctuated by red flags along the way. What Rangers need, moving forward, is a period of steady, irrefutable progress and consistency on the pitch. But Clement’s track record paints a picture of calamity.

“12 months on, Clement’s claims have been made to look plainly ridiculous. If anything, Rangers are currently in the grips of injury pandemic which is making his recent struggles even more pronounced.”

Rangers have taken too long to make a decision on Philippe Clement

Whenever it seems that he’s one game away from the sack, the Belgian manages to get the win and his team play exceptionally well.

However, what follows is two to three games where fans watch their side in anguish for the full 90 minutes.

This has been a pattern since he’s taken over and after a year, there appears to be no real progress.

The only positives are individual performances carrying the team over the line, as they did in the 3-0 win over Celtic.

That result did not mean that Clement’s system was better than that of Brendan Rodgers, but it only showed that the Gers players showed up while their opponents did and home advantage played a huge factor.

Their flaws are witnessed on the road and the board cannot decide his future based on one game as the evidence is there for him to be sacked weeks ago.
