Philippe Clement can save Rangers job with new January transfer
Philippe Clement earned some respite when Rangers outclassed Celtic in the Old Firm derby but it will prove brief respite if they can’t consistently back it up.
With the Gers sitting 13 points behind their arch-rivals in top spot, the Belgian has no room for error and is still hanging on to his his job by a thread.
While resources are limited this month, it is essential for the Glasgow outfit to make additions to their squad in January in preparation for the second half of the campaign.
Although supporters will be looking for new arrivals to boost their efforts, Clement could do well to look in more recent history to cause change this term.
Philippe Clement needs change at Rangers
One man who has been linked with a return to Ibrox is Niko Katic with the defender reportedly desperate for a return to his former side [Daily Record, 7 January] after he left the club following a difficult period of injury.
Furthermore, Keith Jackson has reported (8 December) that contact between the Light Blues and their former defender has been made with Katic’s agent looking to line up a move away from Zurich during the transfer window.
This is a transfer that would certainly benefit the Scottish Premiership outfit in the remainder of the campaign as they are currently missing James Tavernier, John Souttar and Leon Balogun through injury leading to makeshift defensive line-ups.
However, this could also prove to be the sort of signing that could really reverse Clement’s fortunes at Ibrox.

Throughout his tenure so far, the 50-year-old has been criticised for his lack of understanding of the culture at Ibrox with his expectations for his side different to those of supporters.
Therefore, bringing back a player who was at Irbox could certainly boost the morale in the dressing room and the stands.
While this would be a single return on paper to boost defensive availability, a Katic return could lead to an impact in the dressing room too which would then translate on to the pitch making this one Clement has to look to complete.
In other Rangers news, a Gers player is now surely on his way out of Ibrox as the club have readied a move for his replacement.
