Keith Jackson shares what he’s heard as Rangers eye defender transfer
Keith Jackson believes Rangers will only make one addition to their squad in the January transfer window.
The Gers have found themselves in the shadow of their arch-rivals Celtic once again this season as they currently have a 13-point gap between themselves and the top spot.
And, thanks to their recent defensive injury crisis that has seen both Leon Balogun and John Souttar ruled out, Philippe Clement’s men have been linked with a move for a new centre-back in the winter window.
Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (7 January) about the potential of a new face being welcomed through the Ibrox doors, Jackson shared his thoughts on Rangers’ current situation.
“The noises I’m hearing is unless they can raise a bit of unexpected money by selling somebody, it’ll be one in [during] December and that one will be a centre-half,” he said.
“[Nikola] Katic there, obviously throwing his name into the ring and you’ve got Jonny Evans who I think Clement and Nils Koppen are being encouraged to consider.
“For me, Katic would be a better long-term project than a guy that’s now 37, but either way, you’re talking about two guys that would add a bit of steel to the Rangers defence”.
Rangers need to sign a centre-back in January
If Rangers go into February without a new centre back within their ranks, they may as well kiss their hopes of earning anything from the 2024/25 season goodbye.
This campaign has already been a tough watch for all those who are involved with the Ibrox outfit and it feels like the only way it’ll get better is if new faces are brought in.
At the moment, Evans and Katic are the names which are popping up and on paper, it feels like both would be industrious additions to the squad.

To be quite frank, in the future, it feels like Clement will need to look at sourcing a replacement for Robin Propper due to the way he’s performed this season.
This is likely not what the 50-year-old wanted to be spending his summer transfer kitty on after attempting to bolster his defensive ranks in the last transfer window.
Only time will tell what the future holds but for now, the Belgian should be scouring the market for reinforcement, otherwise, they may as well write the 2024/25 campaign off already.
In other Rangers news, a Gers player is now surely on his way out of Ibrox as the club have readied a move for his replacement.
