Rangers to hit new level with Jonny Evans signing after Sky Sports pundit claim

Rangers could revolutionise not only their defence but their dressing room leadership standard if they brought Jonny Evans to Ibrox.

The Manchester United veteran has been linked with a move north to join Philippe Clement’s side following a board recommendation from Sky Sports pundit Kris Boyd [Daily Record, 7 January], in what would be a statement signing from the Gers, who are fighting for two remaining realistic honours.

Evans turned 37 this week and could enter the twilight years of an illustrious career by becoming a new Rangers player, in what could provide a magnificent boost both on and off the field.

The Northern Irishman – capped an immense 107 times by his nation – would not only offer plenty to the defence despite his advancing years, but also naturally bring an instant galvanising effect.

Rangers cannot pass up Jonny Evans chance

For much of his career, Evans has gone under the radar. Having played for the likes of Manchester United in two spells; Leicester City and West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League, the glittering array of top-flight teammates will often take the acclaim.

But his surprise return to Old Trafford in the summer of 2023 – having initially trained at Carrington just to maintain fitness as a free agent – has wound up yielding 42 appearances to date, a steady presence in the chaos that has plagued one of the world’s elite clubs.

Evans understands the pressure and experiences it to this day as a United player. He should be universally appreciated at Ibrox from his pedigree, which began as a professional 19 years ago, and could bring the standards to help raise the club to a level not seen since the 55th Scottish title in 2021.

The injury to John Souttar – undoubtedly one of Clement’s players of the season so far – was a huge blow and Leon Balogun, of a similar age profile to Evans, has been given his dues by those who initially wrote him off.

Evans shocked everyone with the levels he demonstrated for the Red Devils despite entering his late thirties, and his professionalism down the years has been second-to-none. In a time when plenty has to change in Govan to enable the Light Blues to compete with Celtic once again, Evans is exactly the type of individual the dressing room is crying out for.
