Rangers could ready surprise new defender transfer in Ibrox reunion

Nikola Katic could return to Rangers in the winter transfer window, Craig Moore says.

The former Gers star has revealed that the Bosnian could potentially come back to Ibrox in the coming weeks after leaving permanently in 2022.

Katic’s name has come up as the Light Blues look for reinforcements in their backline with John Souttar, Leon Balogun and Neraysho Kasanwirjo all injured.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show (6 January), Moore said: “Central defender, who I think Rangers need and has crossed our desk in the last days, is Katic.

“Former player, was solid at the club. Unfortunately, picked up the ACL injury and went to Croatia to get his fitness.

“How would the supporters feel about Katic? I think it’s important that whatever player, if they do look to get a central defender, hits the ground running. There’s no time, transition, three to four months. It’s now. You’ve got to deliver now. He would be a player that would certainly fit that profile.”

Nikola Katic to seal Rangers transfer?

The Bears fans fondly remember the centre-back for scoring the winner at Parkhead against Celtic in 2019.

Having signed for the Gers in 2018 under Steven Gerrard, the 28-year-old was a key member of the squad before an injury derailed his career.

After a loan spell at Hajduk Split in the 2021/22 season, the Bosnia international parted ways with the Glaswegian outfit.

Over the years, Katic has found his fitness at FC Zurich and may be able to solve the defensive crisis at Rangers as they look to bolster their ranks.

In the last few weeks, Philippe Clement has had to rely on the partnership of Dujon Sterling and Robin Propper.

The Belgian manager also had to call upon Leon King in the 3-3 draw with Hibernian, as Sterling had to be withdrawn after a knock.

Clinton Nsiala signed for the Light Blues in the summer of 2024 but has only featured for the B team in the current campaign.

The Gers are still alive in the Europa League and the Scottish Cup, and January signings could boost their chances of winning both competitions.
