Rangers can seal Ben Davies sale now amid Birmingham City transfer update

Birmingham City would be “delighted” to secure the permanent signing of Rangers loanee Ben Davies, according to Birmingham World.

The West Midlands news outlet reported on Monday (6 January) that the English League One outfit view Davies, who is currently on loan, as a long-term option at St Andrew’s.

Philippe Clement has been urged to cash in on the 29-year-old amid claims he could be recalled to ease the ongoing injury crisis at Ibrox, and his sale appears to be set in stone after a highly successful loan spell in Birmingham.

Rangers will sell Ben Davies to Birmingham City

While the original loan deal does not include a purchase option, obligatory or otherwise, Rangers are in a strong position to negotiate Davies’ sale this month.

Although the Gers could wait until the summer and hope to negotiate a higher fee should Birmingham achieve Championship promotion, Clement needs the funds now.

The Light Blues suffered another setback in the Scottish Premiership after the 3-3 draw against Hibernian on Sunday (5 January) following the deceivingly momentum-boosting 3-0 win against Celtic at Ibrox the week prior.

As if the hopes of a successful SPFL campaign were not already up in smoke, the gap to league leaders Celtic has increased again to 13 points.

Rangers
Ben Davies has been in and out of the Rangers team this past season.

Furthermore, reported transfer target Bamo Meite is no longer an option to strengthen the backline at Ibrox this month after Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi confirmed his latest long-term injury setback.

Rangers may be forced to put past rivalries aside and complete a controversial swoop for Watford defender Ryan Porteous, formerly of Hibs, who is available this month [Fussball Europa] and the options dwindling.

Regardless, Nils Koppen should sit at the table with Birmingham and see whether a deal for Davies can be thrashed out this month while his stock is at its highest – then, he should look to find Clement the adequate defensive cover.
