Philippe Clement decides on Jonny Evans signing in fresh Rangers transfer news

Jonny Evans has been suggested as a January signing to Philippe Clement at Rangers, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper reported via their transfer blog on 7 January that a member of the Light Blues board has suggested Evans as a potential signing this month.

However, Clement has ruled out a move for the 37-year-old despite the Manchester United ace being a boyhood Gers fan as he prefers signing a young option.

The Glasgow giants are in the market for a new centre-back amid injuries to John Souttar, Leon Balogun and Neraysho Kasanwirjo.

Signing Evans as a stop-gap solution would make sense for the Ibrox outfit, considering the veteran is still in shape and has started three Premier League games for Manchester United this season.

However, it appears Clement is not prepared to take such risks, turning his attention towards bringing in a young defender.

Primarily a central defender, the right-footed player is also comfortable playing at right-back, thus making him an attractive option to Rangers.

The Premiership club are likely to pursue a loan deal for the player as they probably cannot afford to buy him as Marseille only bought him from Lorient permanently last summer.

Should such an agreement do not work out, it would not be a surprise if Clement green-lit a move for Evans.
