Jonny Evans question posed as Rangers eye transfer for Man Utd defender

Rangers might not be able to afford the transfer of Jonny Evans in the January transfer window despite recent links, Michael Grant has said.

This season has been a bit topsy-turvy for Rangers as they currently sit second in the Scottish Premiership with a 13-point gap between themselves and the top spot.

They’ve also gone through a pretty hefty injury crisis this term which has resulted in links to players such as three-time Premier League winner, Evans [Keith Jackson, 7 January].

Speaking on the Scottish Football Podcast (7 January), Michael Grant has questioned whether Rangers have the financial capability to pull off the deal.

“They’ve been linked with Jonny Evans who’s 37 and a Northern Irish veteran, on the one hand, you can see that making sense whether it’s remotely affordable, I don’t know,” he said.

“But, Jonny Evans shows that Rangers’ priority at the moment is centre-half.”

Jonny Evans could be exactly what Rangers need

It comes as no surprise that this season, the Ibrox outfit have been through it, whether that be on the pitch with their results or off of it with the scandal surrounding the Copland Road stand at the start of the season, the 2024/25 campaign has just not been the one for Rangers.

At the moment, Robin Propper is Philippe Clement’s only fit natural centre-back and although Dujon Sterling has been putting in a decent shift as his partner, it’s evident that reinforcement is needed.

Their title hopes are now well and truly out of the window after their 3-3 draw against Hibernian on 5 January and while they still have the Europa League to think about, it feels like the second half of this season should be spent building up the team’s cohesion.

Evans’ arrival would not only add a level head to their back line but it would also add a mentor for the youngsters in the squad which, in reality, would be an ideal scenario for Rangers to find themselves in.
