Rangers want to sign Marseille star as ‘release voucher’ emerges

Rangers are interested in signing Bamo Meite from Marseille this month, according to Saber Desfarges.

The journalist, who is employed by French television network TF1, reported via his personal X account on 5 January that the Light Blues, as well as Montpellier, want the young centre-back on a “dry” loan.

Marseille, for their part, are prepared to let Meite leave during the ongoing January transfer window, but want to include a buy option or obligation in any loan agreement.

Desfarges says Meite has a “release voucher” to leave the Ligue 1 giants.

Philippe Clement eye Bamo Meite after Neraysho Kasanwirjo injury

Meite is a right-footed centre-back who can also operate as a right-back.

It is evident that Philippe Clement appreciates such versatility in his players, as evidenced by the loan signing of Neraysho Kasanwirjo from Feyenoord.

Kasanwirjo played across the back four for the Glasgow giants before suffering an injury setback in November.

With the Dutchman a significant way away from regaining full fitness, it is easy to see why Rangers are interested in signing Meite on a straight loan deal.

However, it remains to be seen if Nils Koppen can convince Marseille to ease their stance regarding the terms of the agreement.

The Ivorian spent the 2023-24 season on loan with the Ligue 1 club before making the move permanent last summer.

Meite, though, has found playing time hard to come by at Marseille this season, with Roberto De Zerbi restricting him to just 24 minutes of playing time in Ligue 1.

If all goes according to plan, he could replace Kasanwirjo at Rangers for the second half of the season.
