Clement sack: Rangers ‘hogwash’ blasted as outrage emerges over ‘sheer idiocy’

Rangers fans have been blasted by Robert Grieve for now thinking that Philippe Clement is the right man to lead them forward.

Clement won his first Old Firm derby on 2 January with the Gers easily brushing aside Celtic 3-0 at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership.

However, the Light Blues remain 11 points behind their bitter rivals in the title race – if you can even call it that – and have been guilty of multiple horrific performances under Clement’s leadership.

Newspaper columnist Grieve has mocked those who are now putting Clement up on a pedestal after his first win over Celtic in seven attempts.

Writing in the Scottish Sun on Sunday (page 62, 5 January), Grieve said: “So Philippe Clement is no longer teetering on the brink.

“For some, in fact, the Old Firm result at Ibrox proved beyond all doubt that the big Belgian is absolutely 100 per cent the right man for Rangers.

“It seems the mere suggestion he was ever for the broth pot was sheer idiocy.

“All because of a couple of admirable derby performances in the space of 17 days.

“What do you mean there were three other turgid displays during that time? No, it seems everyone has to ignore those.

“I’m sorry, but what hogwash.”

Will Rangers sack Philippe Clement?

Look, Rangers haven’t been perfect under Clement.

In fact, they’ve been nowhere near it.

However, the Belgian boss has had to fix a lot of the broken things that were left for him by former manager Michael Beale.

He’s also had to cope with absolutely abysmal, rudderless leadership above him.

Rangers have gone backwards pretty much every year since Steven Gerrard left in November 2021.

Is that the fault of the managers each time? Partly, yes. And Clement is guilty of some absolute howlers in his time at Ibrox.

However, there’s got to come a time where Rangers stop sacking and replacing managers and actually stand by a man for at least a couple of years to see if he can make something of his time there.

Fans won’t accept this following statement but Celtic are a better team than the Gers and, therefore, are going to win more Old Firm derbies, more silverware and more matches in general.

Can the Light Blues hack away at the gap between themselves and their Old Firm rivals simply by sacking their managers? No, they can’t.

There’s a new hierarchy in place at Ibrox now. Let’s see how they can help Clement to help Rangers finally make up some ground.
