Chris Sutton blasts ‘daft’ Rangers player after incident in draw v Hibs

Chris Sutton blasted Ianis Hagi after he conceded a penalty to Hibernian in Rangers’ 3-3 draw at Easter Road on Sunday.

Despite taking the lead after just four minutes, the Gers conceded a goal that made it 2-2 in the 61st minute with the hosts scoring a penalty.

As Josh Campbell entered the box, Hagi made a poor challenge trying to barge his opponent out of the way which led him to take none of the ball and gave the hosts a penalty to make it level.

Speaking live on Sky Sports Football commentary (5 January, 1:18pm), Sutton criticised Hagi as he said: “Brilliant touch out for Campbell and I think he just gets his body in and he draws the foul from Hegi.

“Hegi behind Campbell. It’s a daft challenge, it’s a daft shot, allows John Beaton to make the decision.

From Rangers’ point of view, they’ll say it’s a soft one. He doesn’t get any of the ball Hagi, gets the man first.”

Rangers settle for a point against Hibernian

Hagi will be feeling disappointed with himself as the Gers drew the game 3-3, feeling like they have dropped points after getting back ahead to 3-2 following the penalty incident.

Despite starting the game well, Philippe Clement’s side allowed their opponents to get back into it and at 2-1 it was Hibernian who looked more like scoring the next goal.

Therefore, it was a silly decision from the attacking midfielder to make the foul he did in the box as it gave the opponents a perfect opportunity to score, more certain that Campbell would have been if he’d taken the chance himself.

While it may have been a bit of a soft one, when you don’t get any of the ball and make a physical challenge in the box there can’t be too many complaints when a penalty is awarded.

The Light Blues managed to get back on top but it was short-lived and after drawing the game 3-3, the 26-year-old will no doubt have been left feeling like he was part of a moment which changed the game.
